Time for the in-laws to get a new car. I need some help with a new recommendation.

The stats: early 60's, retired. starting to slow down. Live for the grandkids type of fam. Two dogs. AWD appreciated, not required.

Previous 3 cars: 2004 WJ special edition, 2009 Taurus fully loaded, and currently in a 2013 Fusion. They have also had a Sentra, civic, and XJ in the past.

They are starting to talk about wanting a midsize SUV. I am assuming $30k is the target sticker, give or take.

Do I move them upmarket towards a base GLA? Make them look at an Encore? Or do I stick to the Escape/Cherokee/Santa Fe? (RAV4 is ugly. CRV is ugly.)

Basically... if you had $30k to put towards a small to midsize SUV, what would you choose?

why SUV?

I'd look at CPO lexus IS250. AWD, smooth as butter motor, decent fuel econ, lexus build quality.

Stay away from the new Escapes, IMO they are just a bigger Focus in many aspects. If you can get a Cherokee for under $30K I would go with that.

If they are staying mainstream, what about a Forester?

Escape/Santa Fe/Tuscon

Maybe even a Flex? They've got some retro-ish style going on. Closest new car to a wagon outside of a Legacy.

Actually, add Crosstrek XV to that list. They're really not that bad for what they are. It's a car, keep up on maintenance and it'll be fine. Warranties exist for a reason after all.
